We’re taking an important step forward in strengthening support for people with disabilities in Nova Scotia.

The Province is partnering with Dalhousie University to create one of four new disability support outreach teams across the province. These teams will provide a broad range of services that complement what’s already available in the community, with a focus on helping individuals live more independently and successfully.

Through this partnership, Dalhousie will provide space and support for clinical education and training, while the Province funds key outreach positions and operations. This means better access to services today, and stronger training opportunities for the next generation of health professionals.

These multidisciplinary teams may include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, dietitians, and other specialists. Services will include health assessments, skill development, and support for families, caregivers, and providers.

This initiative also supports the work of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and advances the Nova Scotia Human Rights Remedy by expanding inclusive, community-based care.

A team will be available in each region of the province, with the Dalhousie-based team serving the central region later this year. The western team is already in place, and planning is underway for the eastern and northern regions.

This is about building a more inclusive system that respects dignity, improves access, and supports people where they live.
