Nova Scotia has officially welcomed a new fleet of helicopters that will help protect communities, support emergency response, and strengthen wildfire preparedness across the province.
The new fleet of four Airbus H125 helicopters will be used to:
• Fight wildfires
• Support search and rescue operations
• Assist with scientific research
• Transport people and equipment during emergencies
• Conduct aerial surveillance in support of other government departments
Based in Shubenacadie, the helicopters replace the province’s previous fleet and offer enhanced capabilities for responding to emergencies. When battling wildfires, they can scoop and drop large volumes of water quickly from Nova Scotia’s many lakes and ponds, making them an important tool for protecting people, property, and natural resources.
Following a public naming contest that received nearly 10,000 submissions, the helicopters have been named:
• Spirit of the Osprey
• Spirit of the Eagle
• Spirit of the Hawk
• Spirit of the Falcon
The new fleet was purchased through a federal-provincial agreement on wildfire equipment and training, with each level of government contributing $12.6 million.
This investment strengthens Nova Scotia’s emergency response capabilities and helps ensure our crews have the equipment they need to keep communities safe when it matters most.
