Public Works seeing the Issues Firsthand: Road and Egress Updates

Hi All, I want to share some of what I’ve been doing recently to keep attention on our community’s road and egress concerns.

As many of you know, I too was evacuated during the 2023 wildfires, and understand firsthand how deeply our community feels about egress, infrastructure, and wildfire prevention. These concerns come up in nearly every conversation I have, whether it’s a chat in the grocery line, a community event, or a meeting in my office. Every family in our area was impacted, and it’s why I continue to keep these issues front and center in my work.

Earlier this year, the Province released the provincial Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), a first-of-its-kind blueprint for the HRM region and surrounding municipalities. It outlines long-term actions to improve road safety, reduce congestion, enhance turning lanes and intersections, address egress and strengthen community connections.

I provided detailed input on the RTP, and they confirmed that the priorities I raised were carefully considered in shaping the plan. While this is an important step in the process, I’ll continue pushing to move from planning to action so our community sees real improvements on the ground.

After several in-office meetings with Public Works, I brought the department out to the riding to see these issues on the ground and continue the discussion about next steps.

This morning I brought out Public Works Minister Fred Tilley, the Province’s Chief Engineer, and the Associate Deputy Minister for a drive through our area to see firsthand the traffic, road, and egress issues residents deal with every day.

We started in Indigo Shores and travelled through Lucasville and Hammonds Plains, stopping to discuss areas like Margeson Drive, egress, community connector roads, turning lanes, and possible roundabouts.

There’s strong collaboration happening across departments and levels of government, and I’ll keep pushing to ensure our local priorities remain a key part of the planning that’s underway. While it is a challenge provincially that these roads are HRM-managed, I’ll continue to work closely with the Province and our local councillors to ensure our community’s priorities are front and center and that we move from planning to practical improvements on the ground.
