Energy competition is finally arriving in Nova Scotia.

A new project near Milton in Queens County, called the Mersey River Wind project, is moving forward as a key foundation for this change. This 33-turbine farm will generate enough clean electricity to power more than 50,000 homes. This represents roughly 5% of the province’s total power and it marks a significant shift in how our electricity is sold. For the first time, independent retailers like Renewall Energy Inc. will be able to sell electricity DIRECTLY to residents and businesses, providing a legitimate alternative to the traditional single utility model.

What is changing:
– Residential customers can join a waitlist now through the Renewall website to secure their spot, as accounts will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
– Most residential households and small businesses that currently receive a bill from Nova Scotia Power are eligible to join this waitlist and prepare for the switch.
– Residents will have the option to choose a 5 year fixed-price contract, which offers long-term protection against the frequent rate hikes seen in the traditional system.
– A new Independent Energy System Operator (IESO) is taking over grid management from Nova Scotia Power to act as a neutral referee, ensuring fair competition for all producers.
– This project is creating over 200 jobs while building out our province’s renewable energy expertise and infrastructure.

It is a major first step toward leveling the playing field and opening up the market for everyone.
