Update on the Highway 101 Connector

I wanted to share an important update regarding the proposed link between Hammonds Plains Road and Highway 101. Today, the province issued a Request for Proposals for the engineering and environmental work required for this project.

I know that for many, news of a new road brings mixed feelings. There are valid concerns about how this might impact future development and the character of our community.

However, there are a few critical reasons why this project is moving forward:
– Emergency Access: We’ve seen firsthand how vulnerable our community can be. Another way out of our neighbourhoods isn’t just a convenience; it is a necessity for emergency evacuations.
– Fixing Current Gridlock: Our roads are already over capacity. This 5km link is designed to take the pressure off Hammonds Plains Road and get residents home to their families faster. The highway connector adds capacity.
– Lucasville Road as a Community Road versus a transportation corridor. This will help reduce the through fair usage at Lucasville Road, reduce through traffic helps make the road safer.

Protecting our Environment:
The work starting now is an environmental assessment. This is the stage where experts look at the impact on our local wetlands, watercourses, and Sandy Lake to ensure that if we build, we do it responsibly and protect the natural beauty we all moved here to enjoy.

This project will give our area the highway access it has needed for a long time.

Press Release:

PUBLIC WORKS–Hammonds Plains to Highway 101 Connector Project Begins
———————————————————————————————————-
The Hammonds Plains to Highway 101 connector project is now underway with a request for proposals issued today, March 16, for engineering services to prepare for an environmental assessment.

The new five-kilometre strategic link will connect Hammonds Plains Road near Sandy Lake with Exit 2 on Highway 101.

Along with reducing congestion on surrounding roads, it will also create another way out of several neighbourhoods in an emergency. Transit routes could also be created or adapted in the area.

“Anyone who has driven in Halifax Regional Municipality has experienced the increasingly congested roads,” said Fred Tilley, Minister of Public Works. “This is the first step in this project which, combined with other projects planned for the area, will relieve congestion and improve safety.”

The request for proposals calls for a consultant to assess potential environmental impacts in the project area. It will identify measures to avoid, reduce or mitigate effects on wetlands, wildlife, watercourses and nearby communities.

Quick Facts:
– the environmental assessment is required under the provincial Environmental Assessment Regulations
– the project was announced in October 2024 along with several other projects to reduce congestion and improve safety
– qualified firms will have until April 10 to submit their proposals
– the Hammonds Plains to Highway 101 connector project is recommended in the Regional Transportation Plan under Action 1.2.3 and is also identified as a key priority in the government’s response to the plan
