Understanding our local water systems is an important part of building a stronger, more resilient Hammonds Plains–Lucasville.
I’m pleased to share the results of a recent groundwater monitoring and water literacy project in Upper Hammonds Plains, completed in partnership with NSCC Applied Research and community collaborators, including the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust.
The project examined local groundwater conditions while helping residents better understand how groundwater systems work, why they matter, and how they connect to everyday water use.
The findings provide valuable insight into our local water resources:
26 water quality reports were completed.
20 of those reports identified at least one water quality issue.
11 sites were linked to local bedrock conditions, helping researchers better understand how the area’s geology influences groundwater.
This information is important because reliable, safe water is fundamental to every household. Better data can help residents and property owners make more informed decisions, while also contributing to longer-term planning and water security across our community.
Just as importantly, this project demonstrates the value of bringing research and local knowledge together. By connecting NSCC’s technical expertise with the experience and priorities of the Upper Hammonds Plains community, we can build a clearer picture of the challenges and opportunities facing our local groundwater systems.
