New Legislation to Strengthen Public Safety and Protect Nova Scotians
New legislation introduced today will help strengthen public safety and ensure Nova Scotia’s laws keep pace with evolving risks, both online and in our communities.
The Public Safety Act includes measures to:
• Strengthen protections for victims of intimate image abuse, including images created or altered using artificial intelligence
• Address properties connected to serious criminal activity, including human trafficking and gang activity
• Establish a modern framework for Nova Scotia’s Conservation Officer Service
• Modernize 911 services and support the transition to Next Generation 911
• Protect emergency helicopter flight paths to hospital helipads
• Allow entities listed as terrorist organizations under the Criminal Code to be quickly dissolved
For victims of intimate image abuse, the proposed changes would expand the circumstances in which people can seek help, including when consent to share an image has been revoked or someone has threatened to distribute an image. The legislation would also strengthen enforcement and reduce the burden on victims.
The changes to the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act would strengthen the civil process for addressing properties that pose serious risks to community safety. This process is separate from the criminal complaints process.
A new Conservation Officer Service Act would also bring existing authorities into a clear, modern framework, providing conservation officers with greater clarity and accountability as they protect our natural resources, wildlife, Crown lands, forests, and communities.
Public safety is constantly evolving, and our laws need to evolve with it. These measures are intended to provide stronger protections for Nova Scotians while giving the people responsible for public safety the tools and clarity they need to do their jobs.
