The Province has launched a new African Nova Scotian Skilled Trades Strategy aimed at recruiting, retaining, and supporting youth as they explore careers in the skilled trades. Developed in partnership with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency and The PREP Academy, this initiative is backed by a $480,000 investment over two years.

This strategy focuses on breaking down barriers and ensuring African Nova Scotian youth can see themselves in the trades and access the supports they need to succeed. It includes one-on-one mentorship for apprentices, career navigation support for youth, and programming designed to engage families and caregivers.

Through strong collaboration with community organizations, educators, and industry partners, the strategy will deliver culturally relevant training and mentorship while helping connect young people to meaningful, in-demand careers.

Each year, the initiative will support:
• 80 African Nova Scotian apprentices through mentorship
• 40 high school students with coaching, workshops, and career guidance
• 20 families with tools to help support youth pursuing careers in the trades

This is an important step toward strengthening workforce diversity, addressing labour shortages, and creating more equitable access to opportunity across Nova Scotia.
