June is Scleroderma Awareness Month, and June 29 marks World Scleroderma Day.
Scleroderma is a rare, progressive, and chronic autoimmune disease that causes excess collagen accumulation in the body. While many people associate scleroderma with hardening of the skin, the disease can also affect internal organs, mobility, independence, and overall quality of life. Many of its symptoms are invisible, making awareness and understanding especially important.
Approximately 400 Nova Scotians are living with scleroderma, a disease for which there is currently no cure. This month, we recognize the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by scleroderma and help raise awareness of the need for continued support, research, and education.
